Abstract
Weeds have a negative impact on the growth and yield of shallot plants. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of mango (Harum Manis variety) and red guava leaves extracts in suppressing weed growth and their effects on the growth and yield of shallots. The experiment was arranged in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with a single factor consisting of seven treatments (leaves extracts of mango and guava at concentrations of 40%, 50%,
60%, and a control without treatment), each replicated three times.Vegetation analysis showed that Eragrostis amabilis was the dominant weed species with the
highest dry weight before soil tillage and at 5 weeks after planting (WAP). ANOVA results showed significant effects of the treatments on the observed parameters. The 60% guava leaves extract treatment (P6) was the most effective
in suppressing weed growth, producing the lowest weed dry weight and achieving a weed control efficiency of 58.02%, categorized as moderately efficient (M). No phytotoxic symptoms were observed in any treatment plots. P6 significantly increased plant height and number of leaves. Treatments P4, P5 and P6 of guava leaves extract yielded equally positive results in terms of number of bulbs per clump, fresh and dry bulb weight per clump, and bulb weight per harvest plot.
Keywords : Shallots, Weeds, Mango leaves extract, Guava leaves extract.
