Abstract

Bagaimana jadinya jika seorang praktisi Public Relations bekerja di suatu perusahaan kontroversi yang selalu dikaitkan sebagai penyebab dari berbagai penyakit mengerikan dan kematian manusia, yaitu rokok? Hal inilah yang digambarkan oleh film Thank You for Smoking. Film ini bercerita tentang kiprah seorang juru bicara Akademi Kajian Tembakau. Untuk itu, tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui nilai-nilai Public Relations yang terdapat dalam film Thank You for Smoking. Rumusan masalah dari penelitian ini adalah bagaimana Nilai-nilai Public Relations yang direpresentasikan dalam film Thank You For Smoking? Penelitian ini adalah analisis semiotika dengan menggunakan metode semiotik Roland Barthes. Melalui metode tersebut, diklasifikasikan adeganadegan yang mengandung nilai-nilai Public Relations, kemudian adegan-adegan tersebut diungkap makna denotasi dan konotasinya. Pada dasarnya dalam suatu film banyak terdapat tanda yang harus diintepretasikan tentunya sesuai dengan konteks yang menyertai setiap adegan sehingga nantinya akan menghasilkan pemaknaan dan berlanjut pada pemahaman isi pesan. Dalam penelitian ini, peneliti menemukan empat representasi nilai-nilai Public Relations, yaitu fundamental value (nilai fundamental), strategic value (nilai strategis), tactical value (nilai taktis), dan reputational value (nilai reputasi). Sutradara film ini, Jason Reitman, mewujudkan nilai-nilai Public Relations dalam film sehingga menonton film ini selain menghibur juga dapat memberikan banyak wawasan strategis dan banyak ungkapan inspiratif, juga pola pikir cerdas yang dapat dimanfaatkan oleh praktisi Public Relations dalam kehidupan nyata. Keyword : Nilai-nilai Public Relations, Analisis semiotika, film Thank You for Smoking How is it going to be, if a Public Relations officer works in the controversy company which is always related with killing diseases and death, it is cigarette? It is what this movie, ‘Thank You for Smoking, tries to deliver. This movie is telling about a spoke person of The Academy of Tobacco Studies for cigarette. That’s for, this research tries to understand the Public Relations values represented in ‘Thank You for Smoking’ movie. The case of this research is how are Public Relations values represented in ‘Thank You for Smoking’ movie. This research is a semiotic analysis using semiotic method by Roland Barthes. Consider to the method, it is classified the scenes representing Public Relations values, then uncover the denotative and connotative meaning of each scene. Basically, a movie contains of many signs that can be interpreted through the context of each scene then it results the meaning and continues to the comprehension of the message. In this research, the researcher found four representations of Public Relations values, they are fundamental value, strategic value, tactical value, and reputational value. As the director, Jason Reitman, he brought the Public Relations values into film. That’s why, by watching this movie, besides entertains, it also gives many knowledge’s and inspiring expression, and also smart ways of thinking especially in Public Relations world.
