Abstract

Film merupakan media komunikasi massa. Bentuk komunikasi yang dihadirkan dalam film tersirat
dalam gambar dan suara yang secara semiotis dipahami sebagai tanda. Untuk memahami pesan
dalam film, digunakanlah analisis semiotika. Penelitian berjudul “Analisis Semiotika Nilai Kritik Sosial
Dalam Film A Barefoot Dream” ini memanfaatkan metode penelitian kualitatif interpretatif dengan
teknik analisis semiotika dan teori semiotika Ferdinand de Saussure sebagai landasan untuk
menganalisis nilai kritik sosial dalam film ini. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah (1) memahami nilai
kritik sosial dalam film “A Barefoot Dream”, (2) mengetahui tanda atau simbol yang mengandung
makna kritik sosial dalam film “A Barefoot Dream”, dan (3) mengetahui pesan yang ingin
disampaikan film “A Barefoot Dream”. Film “A Barefoot Dream” merupakan film yang mengisahkan
perjuangan seorang pelatih sepak bola dan sekelompok anak kecil yang dilatihnya dalam meraih
kesuksesan di bidang sepak bola. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah (1) film ini mengandung nilai kritik
sosial terhadap berbagai aspek negatif dalam bidang ekonomi, pendidikan, dan keamanan di Timor
Leste, (2) kritik sosial yang dihadirkan di dalam film ini tampak dalam berbagai tanda seperti dialog
antara James dan Mr. Kim tentang besarnya bantuan PBB untuk Timor Leste yang mengandung
makna ketergantungan Timor Leste terhadap bantuan asing, tanda berupa gambar anak-anak yang
mengumpulkan sendiri dana untuk berangkat ke Hiroshima yang bermakna rendahnya dukungan
pemerintah dalam pengembangan bakat anak-anak, dan tanda berupa gambar Kota Dili yang
terbakar akibat kerusuhan yang bermakna terhambatnya pelayanan umum akibat banyaknya
fasilitas penting di Timor Leste yang rusak akibat sering terjadinya konflik bersenjata, (3) pesan
moral utama dari film ini adalah keberhasilan atau impian akan dapat dicapai jika seseorang mau
bekerja keras dan melewati berbagai keterbatasan yang ada. Kata Kunci: Semiotika, Kritik Sosial, A

Film is a media of mass communication. The form of communication that is presented in film is
generally implied in picture and sound which are known as signs. Through semiotic analysis, the
signs are analyzed to find the main values of film. This study entitled "Semiotic Analysis on Social
Criticism Values In The Film A Barefoot Dream" uses semiotic analysis technique and
qualitativeinterpretative method with semiotic theory of Ferdinand de Saussure as the base of this
study. This research aims (1) to comprehend the social criticism values in the movie “A Barefoot
Deram”, (2) to understand symbols which carry the meaning of social criticism values in the movie
“A Barefoot Deram”, and (3) to know the message that is carried by the movie “A Barefoot Deram”.
“A Barefoot Deram” is a movie which tells the story of a football coach and his boys who struggle to
reach their dream of success in football. The results of this research are: (1) this movie contains of
social criticism values on the aspects of economy, education, and national security in Timor Leste. (2)Signs that carry out the social criticism meaning e.a. the dialogue between Mr. Kim and James about
the UN’s aid for East Timor which uncovers the dependence of East Timor on the foreigners aid, the
picture of children who try to raise fund for the journey to Hiroshima that shows us the lack of
support from the government to children’s development, and the picture of the burning city of Dili
which means the frequently deadly violences in Dili as a threat to national development programs.
(3) The main value of this movie is that everyone can go for his dream if he can face and overcome
