Abstract
A well-designed mine drainage system is a fundamental component in the
planning of a new open-pit mine (greenfield) to ensure production continuity and
operational safety from the early stages of mining activities. This study aims to
compare the Rational Method and the Nakayasu Method in determining the
required sump capacity for Pit 19AS, a planned mining area with a catchment area
of 289 ha. The research methodology consisted of rainfall frequency analysis, runoff
discharge calculations using the Rational Method and the Nakayasu Synthetic Unit
Hydrograph Method, and water balance simulations to determine the required sump
capacity. The results indicate a significant difference between the two methods. For
a 5-year return period, the Rational Method produced a runoff discharge of 12.78
m³/s, while the Nakayasu Method generated a runoff discharge of 40.03 m³/s. Based
on the water balance simulation, the sump capacity calculated using the Rational
Method was 168,773 m³, whereas the Nakayasu Method resulted in a sump capacity
of 179,156 m³. The Nakayasu Method is capable of representing the temporal
distribution of runoff through a hydrograph that incorporates time lag, peak
discharge, and recession flow characteristics, making it more suitable as a basis for
water balance simulations in sump capacity planning. The recommended sump
capacity was determined in accordance with the technical criteria for mine drainage
systems as stipulated in the Decree of the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources
of the Republic of Indonesia Nomor 1827 K/30/MEM/2018.
