ABSTRACT
Rotary Kiln – Electric Furnace (RKEF) is a proven technology for
processing lateritic nickel ore into the raw material for stainless steel called ferro-
nickel (Fe-Ni). However, this technology has issues concerning high energy
consumption to eliminate a significant amount of water and gangue. The
dewatering process taking place in the rotary dryer is a stage that consumes a
considerable amount of energy.
This research aims to identify the potential energy savings from all material
and energy flow in the rotary dryer process. Analysis of mass and energy flows is
developed based on the laws of conservation of mass and energy. The modeling of
mass and energy flows is based on operational data and process-related supporting
data for the rotary dryer.
The results of the mass flow analysis show an incoming and outgoing mass
of the system amounting to 205.629,72 kg/h. Meanwhile, the results of the energy
flow analysis yield an input energy of 26.934.742,06 kcal/h and energy efficiency
of 72,23%. The energy in flue gas amounts to 19.056.520,76 kcal/h. Energy
efficiency in the rotary dryer may be increased by reusing the energy in flue gas
using a water heating boiler. Another option is to change the surplus air coefficient
to 1,15 which would reduce the amount of energy lost in flue gas to 18.927.142,91
kcal/h.

ABSTRAK
Rotary Kiln – Electric Furnace (RKEF) adalah teknologi yang proven untuk
mengolah bijih nikel laterit menjadi bahan dasar baja tahan karat yang disebut
feronikel (Fe-Ni). Namun, teknologi ini memiliki masalah terkait konsumsi energi
yang tinggi untuk mengeliminasi sejumlah besar air dan gangue. Proses dewatering
yang berlangsung pada rotary dryer adalah tahapan yang mengonsumsi banyak
energi.
Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi potensi penghematan energi
dari semua aliran material dan energi pada proses di rotary dryer. Analisa aliran
massa dan energi dikembangkan berdasarkan hukum konservasi massa dan energi.
Pemodelan aliran massa dan energi didasarkan pada data operasional dan data
pendukung proses yang terkait dengan rotary dryer.
Hasil analisa aliran massa menunjukkan massa yang masuk dan keluar
sistem sebesar 205.629,72 kg/jam. Sementara itu hasil analisa aliran energi
diperoleh energi yang masuk sebesar 26.934.742,06 kkal/jam dan efisiensi energi
sebesar 72,23%. Energi pada flue gas sebesar 19.056.520,76 kkal/jam. Upaya
peningkatan efisiensi energi yang dapat dilakukan adalah dengan merecovery
kembali gas buang dengan boiler. Alternatif lainnya, yaitu dengan pengurangan
koefisien udara berlebih menjadi 1,15 sehingga dapat meminimalkan energi yang
terbuang bersama flue gas menjadi 18.927.142,91 kkal/jam.
