Abstract
This paper presents a simulated annealing (SA) approach to the cell layout problem
with multiple objectives: minimizing make-span and the total load variation within cell.
This approach efficiently yields good solutions and tends to be sensitive to using the
“temperature” and “cooling ratio”. The results indicate that the proposed procedure
performs very well in terms of both minimizing make-span and total load variation. It is
shown that this procedure is extendable to other layout and material handling system
design problems.
