Geophysical Well Logging Model for Coal Quality and Seam Geometry in
Balikpapan Formation and Kampungbaru Formation

ABSTRAK
Formasi Balikpapan dan Formasi Kampungbaru merupakan formasi pembawa lapisan batubara yang ekonomis. Lapisan
batubara ekonomis ditandai oleh sebaraan yang luas, tebal, dan kualitas yang baik. Untuk mengidentifikasi sebaran,
tebal dan kualitas lapisan batubara dilakukan analisis menggunakan penlogan sumur geofisika khususnya log densitas
dan log gamma ray. Lapisan batubara dapat diidentifikasi dengan mudah, karena lapisan batubara memiliki karakteristik
yang unik. Analisis sebaran, tebal dan kualitas ini dikemas dalam tiga buah model yaitu model deskriptif, model
matematis dan model genetik. Hasil dari penelitian ini menghasilkan karakteristik dari masing-masing formasi yang
khas. Formasi Balikpapan memiliki karakteristik lapisan batubara yang cukup tebal dengan ketebalan 2-5 meter.
Sedangkan Formasi Kampungbaru memiliki karakteristik lapisan batubara yang lebih tipis dari Formasi Balikpapan
berkisar antara 1-3 meter. Kualitas lapisan batubara di Formasi Balikpapan dari hasil laboratorium total moisture (32-
47%) dan ash content (1,9-9,7 %) lebih rendah daripada Formasi Kampungbaru. Hasil laboratorium total sulfur dan
calorific value, Formasi Balikpapan lebih tinggi dibandingkan Formasi Kampungbaru dengan nilai kisaran total sulfur
0,17-3,74% dan calorific value 3288- 5534 adb.

ABSTRACT
Balikpapan Formation and Kampungbaru Formation are economical coal-bearing formations. Economical coal seams
are characterized by wide distribution, thickness, and good quality. Geophysical Well Logging was carried out to
analyze economic coal seams, especially density log and gamma-ray log. Coal seams can be identified easily because
coal seams have unique characteristics. The distribution, thickness, and quality analysis are shown in descriptive,
mathematical, and genetic models. The results of this study produce the characteristics of each typical formation.
Balikpapan Formation has the characteristics of a thick coal seam with a thickness of 2-5 meters. Meanwhile, the
Kampungbaru Formation has the characteristics of a thinner coal seam than the Balikpapan Formation, ranging from
1-3 meters. The quality of the coal seams in the Balikpapan Formation from the laboratory results of total moisture
(32-47%) and ash content (1.9-9.7%) is lower than that of the Kampungbaru Formation. Laboratory results of total
sulfur and calorific value of Balikpapan Formation are higher than Kampungbaru Formation, with a total sulfur value
of 0.17-3.74% and a calorific value of 3288- 5534 adb.
