Abstract

The research on distribution of glyphosate herbicide in soil is important because it can contribute knowledge about the effects of herbicide in soil. The objectives of the research were: (i) to find out the distribution pattern of glyphosate herbicide which has been infiltrated in the soil, (ii) to find out the effects of the residues of glyphosate herbicide on soil properties and plant growth. In greenhouse experiment, three soil subgroups (Typic Udifluvent, Andic Dystrudept and Typic Dystrudept) were prepared into soil columns identical 3,89 kg, 2,28 kg 2,17 kg respectively and were treated with 3 kg/ha glyphosate to each soil column. This experiment was continued with planting soybean and five dosages of glyphosate (0, 1, 2, 3, 4 kg/ha). This experiment used split-split plot design with three replications. The results of this research showed that the distribution of glyphosate in soil is mostly influenced by soil texture, especially clay fraction. Soil with textural classes of sand, loam and clay at field capacity condition adsorbed glyphosate at 62%, 91% and 99%, respectively after the glyphosate application through soil surface. Water infiltration was equivalent to 2 x 125 mm rainfall. The concentration of the residue glyphosate on the lower layer increases on soil textural of sand and it decreases on soil textural of clay. In the meantime, soil textural loam has the characteristics between soil textural of sand and clay. The residues of glyphosate are able to change several properties of soil (chemical and biological properties). The effects of residual glyphosate increased the availability of P, and decreased the available Fe, total microorganism, Rhizobium bacteria and phosphor-solubilizing bacteria on three class textures for sand, loam and clay.
