Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyse how Islam has been playing role in Indonesia's cultural politic. Political Islam has played a significant role in shaping the modern Indonesian political state. Its influence can be seen in the period of pre-independence, through to the Sukarno government, Suharto\'s New Order and the reform era. This paper employs a chronological framework of analysis to examine the development of political Islam and its impact on the evolution of civil society and democracy in Indonesia. The result shows that the interplay of Islam, culture and politics in Indonesia is dynamic. Despite the supress condition of the role of Islam in early modern Indonesia, its contribution toward the development of Indonesia politic is undeniable.
