Abstract

The current density of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is dependent on the characteristics of the gas diffusion electrode (GDE) at the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) such as its thickness, porosity, pore diameter and specific active surface area that in turn determine that heat, mass and momentum transfer as well as the electrochemical reactions in the fuel cell. The GDE characteristics are determined among others by the parameter of its manufacturing process where an x-y robotic sprayer is used move in both the x and y direction. The sprayer arm movement is definded as the Number of Characteristics (Nrs) that dependends on substrate division number (N), nozzle speed (S), frequency of nozzle (F), nozzle spraying distance(W1) and dimension of substrate (x,y). The coefficients of the current density model are correlated with the x-y robotics sprayer parameter. The experimental results showed that the performance of the PEMFC could be predicted using the proposal model. The model could be also to improve the performance of the PEMFC in optimising the manufacturing process of the GDE.
