Abstract

Geothermal energy is a very dynamic system so that it can be called as a renewable system. This system is very different from the other energy systems such as oil, natural gas and coal which are non-renewable. However, if the production is to be increased but neglecting the systemic injection then it can lead to decrease temperature, pH and permeability and to form steam cap formation in the system. These possible changes are often reflected in the occurrence of hydrothermal alteration minerals associated with the changes of reservoir fluid. Kamojang geothermal field is a vapour dominated system with high-temperature and located on active volcanoes area occupied by G (Gunung). Rakutak, G. Gandapura, G. Guntur and G. Masigit. Age of this volcanic complex is Quaternary (0.452-1.2 Ma). G. Guntur is the most active volcano compared to the surrounding volcanoes. Interaction between hydrothermal fluids and rocks produce mineral alterations. Alteration minerals formed in the study area are interstratified illite/montmorillonite (I/M). Analytical method to identify interstratified I/M has been performed by X-ray diffraction using ethylene glycol, while the determination of the type and percentage of interstratified I/M was based on the calculation method of Watanabe (1981). The methodology was applied on core and cutting samples from Wells KMJ-8, 9, 11, 13, 16, 23, 49, 51 and 54. The results of analysis of the samples show that the type of clay is interstratified illite/montmorillonite and the minerals are formed at temperatures ranging from 220-180° C. The type of interstratified I/M in the study area is the type of S = 0 and S = 1. The percentage of illite type S = 0 between 20-35% illite, whereas type S = 1 has about 45-72% illite. Along with increasing depth, the percentage of illite is getting greater. This is consistent with the vertical distribution of temperature which increases according to the depth. This correlation results in an interpretation that the upflow zone of geothermal reservoir is located in the center of the Kamojang geothermal field.
