Abstract
Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan tujuan untuk mengetahui motivasi mahasiswa Ilmu Komunikasi UPN
“Veteran” Yogyakarta yang menggunakan smartphone Andromax Smartfren. Peneliti berusaha untuk
menggali informasi lebih mendalam mengenai motivasi dan faktor-faktor apa saja yang
mendasarimahasiswa Ilmu Komunikasi yang memakai handphone Andromax Smartfren. Peneliti
terbuka atas segala hal yang mampu menjadi kemungkinan motivasi mereka dalam menggunakan
smartphone tersebut. Jenis penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif. Metode penelitian yang
digunakan di dalam penelitian ini adalah metode deskriptif kualitatif, Dengan menggunakan teori
kebutuhan dari Maslow. Kebutuhan ini mempunyai tingkat yang berbeda-beda. Ketika satu tingkat
kebutuhan terpenuhi atau mendominasi, orang tidak lagi mendapat motivasi dari kebutuhan tersebut.
Selanjutnya, orang akan berusaha memenuhi kebutuhan tingkat berikutnya. Peneliti menggunakan
instrument interview guide dengan 10 mahasiswa yang diwawancarai. Dari kesepuluh mahasiswa
tersebut diperoleh hasil penelitian bahwa motivasi mahasiswa Ilmu Komunikasi UPN “Veteran”
Yogyakarta menggunakan Andromax Smartfren smartphone dikategorikan menjadi tiga macam.
Yang pertama yaitu motivasi primer yaitu motivasi yang didasari oleh kebutuhan pokok dalam hal ini
adalah kebutuhan untuk berkomunikasi dengan orang lain. Yang kedua adalah motivasi sekunder
adalah motivasi yang berhubungan dengan penerimaan dalam lingkup dengan hubungan sosial. Yang
ketiga adalah motivasi hedonic yaitu motivasi yang memposisikan manusia dalam mengutamakan
kesenangan untuk dirinya sendiri. Diharapkan penelitian ini mampu menjadi sumber informasi bagi
pembaca dan juga mampu menjadi titik awal dilakukannya penelitian lain dengan penggalian
informasi yang lebih mendalam pada topic yang sejalan dengan penelitian ini.
ABSTRACT
This research is made with the purpose to find out the motivation of Communicative Science students
who use Andromax Smartfren smart phone. The researcher tries to dig out deeper information about
motivation and the factors which triggers the students of Communicative science in using Andromax
Smartfren smart phone. The researcher is welcome with any possibilities which can be students'
motivation in using the type of that smart phone. This research is a descriptive qualitative research.
The method which is used is descriptive qualitative. By employing Maslow’s theory of need these
needs have different stage of levels. When a level of need is fulfilled or dominate others, people will
not get motivation from that need anymore. Then, people will try to accomplish the next stage of
need’s level. The researcher uses interview guide as the instrument of this research with 10 students
who are interviewed. From those ten students, the researcher gets results of the research which show
that motivation of students in Communication Science of UPN Yogyakarta in using Andromax
Smartfren smartphone is categorized into three types. The first one is primary motivation which is
based on the main needs, in this case is dealing with the needs to communicate with others. The
second one is the secondary motivation which is based on the motivation which is dealing with the
social acceptance. The third one is hedonic motivation which place human put the self-amusement in
the first place. Hopefully, this research can be source of information for the readers and also can be
the starting point to conduct further research by discussing deeply in the same topic of discussion
which is in line with this research.
