ABSTRAK
Jumlah pengguna internet di Indonesia pada periode 2022-2023 menyentuh angka
216,63 juta orang. Banyaknya jumlah pengguna internet ini juga diikuti oleh produk
teknologi yang kian menjamur, misalnya seperti Instagram. Tercatat, pengguna
Instagram menyentuh angka 106,7 juta per Februari 2023. Sebanyak 38,8% di
antaranya berasal dari kalangan Generasi Z dengan rentang usia 18-24 tahun dan
menduduki peringkat pertama dibandingkan kelompok usia lain. Melalui angka
tersebut, maka tak mengherankan jika sering muncul fenomena baru di Instagram.
Salah satunya adalah fenomena akun kosong yang terjadi pada kalangan Generasi Z.
Fenomena ini muncul karena belakangan ini, banyak bermunculan akun tanpa foto
profil, bio, serta postingan pada feed Instagram. Penelitian ini mengulas fenomena
tersebut secara mendalam menggunakan pendekatan studi kasus kualitatif.
Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan observasi, wawancara, dokumentasi, serta studi
literatur. Hasil pada penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa hal yang melatarbelakangi
tindakan pengosongan akun adalah faktor internal serta eksternal. Faktor internal dapat
terjadi karena karakteristik introvert pengguna. Sedangkan faktor eksternal berasal dari
interaksi dengan orang lain. Tindakan pengosongan akun ini dilakukan untuk menjaga
privasi dan menghindari penilaian negatif dari orang lain. Meskipun begitu, mereka
tetap melakukan interaksi di Instagram dengan cara memberi likes, komentar, repost,
serta berkirim pesan.

ABSTRACT
The number of internet users in Indonesia in the period 2022-2023 touched 216.63
million people. The large number of internet users is also followed by increasingly
mushrooming technology products, such as Instagram. Instagram users reached 106.7
million as of February 2023. As many as 38.8% of them come from Generation Z with
an age range of 18-24 years and are ranked first compared to other age groups.
Through these numbers, it is not surprising that new phenomena often appear on
Instagram. One of them is the empty account phenomenon that occurs among
Generation Z. This phenomenon arises because lately, many accounts have sprung up
without profile photos, bio, and posts on the Instagram feed. This research reviews the
phenomenon in depth using a qualitative case study approach. Data collection was
done by observation, interview, documentation, and literature study. The results of this
study show that the things behind the act of emptying the account are internal and
external factors. Internal factors can occur due to the introverted characteristics of
users. While external factors come from interactions with other people. The action of
emptying this account is done to maintain privacy and avoid negative judgment from
others. Even so, they still interact on Instagram by giving likes, comments, reposts, and
sending messages.
