Abstract

ABSTRACT Sand production problems are common in oil fieldsfrom producing sandstone formation in shallow to deep depths. Sand production begins to occur if the stress experienced by the formation has exceeded the strength of rock formations, the strength of these rock formations which is the natural strength of rock cementing materials in maintaining the unity of grains - grains of sandstone in formation. The cementation factor of rocks also affects the compactness of formations that cause sand problem, otherwise sand production is very sensitive to the production rate, where at critical production rates, sand will be produced. Stronger sandstone formations (competent) may not produce sand at the beginning of production but after a certain production period begins to occur sand production. There are production wells that are suspended due to problems of high severity causing increased frequency of rig service use in conducting well intervention, causing increased operational costs. Some suspended wells are believed to still have considerable oil potential to be reproduced and may contribute to increased oil production of the field. Some methods to prevent sand problem are using gravel pack to prevent sand entering the wellbore, but cause reduced permeability of wells due to fine particles mixed with gravel pack, installation of sand screen in intake pump that serves to prevent the entry of sand in the pump, but this causes pump off due to sand covering the intake pump (plugging), installation of tubing pump with high clearance to prevent pump stuck , but still cause production loss due to the accumulated sand in the tubing pump. Another effort to install Progressive Cavity Pump (PCP) as an artificial lift method is a solution to produce wells with excessive sand producing in order to be able to produce continuously. PCP basic principle where the rotor movement mechanism against the stator to pass the production fluid including the sand that is attached to the surface so that the problem of pump stuck as a result of sand accumulate can be overcome. In addition to the ability to handle the flow, PCP provides a fairly high level of pump efficiency. Keywords: unconsolidated formation, suspended well, sand problem, well intervention, pump stuck, Progressive Cavity Pump, rotor and stator.
