Abstract

PT. Nusa Halmahera Minerals (PT NHM) is an underground gold mining company which is owned between Newcrest Mining Limited 75% and PT Antam Persero, Tbk 25%. Located in kao District, North Halmahera Regency, North Maluku Province. The study was carried out at the Kencana Underground Mine which mining method is Underhand Cut and Fill (UHCF) which has been operating since 2005. Underground mining activities will always related to the problem of deformation and stability of rock mass around the underground openings. Rock mass characteristics and geological structures will affect the selection of ground support. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the application of the ground support that has been applied to the underground openings. Evaluation is used based on the Rock Mass Index (RMi) and Rock Mass Rating (RMR). Then numerical modeling is applied with the Finite Element Method.The research was conducted at the location of K1 SUB 2B UCI S OD03 and KN-EXP DRIVE. The rock mass classes based on RMi are moderate, with 11 pieces and 9 pieces splitset, 100 mm and 60 mm shotcrete thickness, while based on RMR the rock mass classes are fair rock to good rock, with 15 pieces of splits and 75 mm shotcrete thickness. Then based on Finite Element Method Numerical Modeling and Mohr Columb Failure Criterion obtained the lowest Factor of Safety on the roofs and walls for K1 SUB 2B UC 1 S OD03 with a value of 1.22, for KN-EXP DRIVE with a value of 1.91 with ground support by RMi and RMR. Ground support that is applied by PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals based on RMR is suitable with rock mass condition, but in general, considering from the modeling of ground support needs and yield zones, as well as the total displacement of the underground openings, the RMi classification is more effective in terms of use and efficient in terms of ground support needs.
