Abstract

Film 12 Angry Men adalah film klasik Amerika Serikat keluaran tahun
1957 yang berlatar di pengadilan sebagai media penumpahan ceritanya. Film 12
Angry Men juga merupakan film jenis courtroom drama yang bertutur tentang 12
juri dihadapkan pada kasus pembunuhan tingkat pertama. Para juri dituntut untuk
menentukan keputusan suara bulat apakah terdakwa bersalah atau tidak. Tujuan
penelitian ini untuk mengetahui nilai demokrasi yang digambarkan pada adeganadegan

film 12 Angry Men, serta untuk menemukan pesan yang disampaikan
dalam film 12 Angry Men. Temuan dalam penelitian ini berdasarkan penggunaan
teori semotika model Roland Barthes yang menganalisis secara dua tahap yaitu
tahap denotasi dan tahap konotasi, sekaligus dengan tolak ukur nilai demokrasi
yang dikemukakan oleh John Dewey. Teknik analisis data dalam penelitian ini
adalah melalui cara pengamatan langsung adegan, memahami skenario film yang
diperkuat dengan teks dialog. Uji keabsahan data dalam penelitian ini
menggunakan tiga dari sembilan elemen formula terdiri dari siapa komunikator,
motivasi komunikator dan intertekstualitas. Dari tahap analisis dapat ditemukan
nilai-nilai demokrasi yang tersirat di dalam film 12 Angry Men diantaranya : (1)
memahami keberagaman dalam masyarakat; (2) kebebasan berpendapat; (3)
toleransi; (4) pengendalian diri; dan (5) percaya diri. Dalam film 12 Angry Men
memunculkan mitos yaitu demokrasi tak semata selalu dipandang sebagai sebuah
sistem pemerintahan ataupun yang berbau politik, namun nilai demokrasi yang
tersirat dapat dimaknai sebagai pedoman atau keyakinan dalam berperilaku guna
mewujudkan kehidupan yang demokratis.

“12 Angry Men” is a classical movie of United States in 1957 set out in
court as a media of story-telling. “12 Angry Men” is also a drama courtroom
movie type that tells about 12 jurors faced with first-degree murder cases. The
jurors are required to decide unanimously whether the defendant is guilty or not.
The purpose of this research is to know the value of democracy depicted in scenes
of “12 Angry Men” movie, and to find the message delivered in “12 Angry Men”
movie. The findings in this study are based on the use of Roland Barthes semiotics
model theory that analyzes two stages of denotation and connotation, as well as
the benchmark of democracy values proposed by John Dewey. Technique Data
analysis techniques in this research is through direct observation of scene,
understand the movie scenario reinforced with dialogue text. The validity data test
in this study using three of nine elements formula is who communicator,
communicator motivation and intertextuality. From the analysis stage can be
found the values of democracy implied in the “12 Angry Men” movie, include :
(1) understanding the diversity in society; (2) freedom of expression; (3)
tolerance; (4) self-control; and (5) confident. In the “12 Angry Men” movie is
raises the myth that democracy is not only always seen as a government system or
are related to politics, but the implied value of democracy can be interpreted as a
guideline or belief in behaving in order to realize a democratic life.
