Abstract

Changes in the matrix potential and soil moisture under vegetation stands of coastal areas have been research, because it can determine the amount of water needed by the vegetation. The objective of this research was to find out changes in matrix potential and soil moisture and to find vegetation that are resistant to low soil moisture. Location of this research was in coastal areas, Bugel Village, Kulon Progo District. The method used in this research is the survey method, soil sampling undertaken purposively under vegetation of Canavalia, Calotropis, Casuarina, and Grass wind. Matrix potential is measured directly in the field using soil tensiometer at a depth of 0-20 cm and observed every 15 minutes from 07.00 pm untill 12.00 am and 30 minutes from 12:00 am until 16:00 pm within 3 days respectively. The soil sample was token 3 hours to analyze moisture content in the laboratory. The parameters used in this research were: the matrix potential, moisture content and soil moisture loss. The results showed that the soil under some vegetation, the matrix potential value increases with time. Daily soil moisture levels for each day less and less when entering the afternoon. The Vegetation that requires water or at least resistant to low soil moisture is Krandang (Canavalia virosa). Keywords: matrix potential, soil moisture, Canavalia.
