Abstract

Chemical pesticides are still widely used to control Plutella xylostella, causing negative environmental impacts. This study evaluated the effect of combining cashew seed shell extract with Dioscorea hispida tuber extract as an eco-friendly botanical insecticide to increase mortality and suppress the development of P. xylostella. A completely randomized design (CRD) with seven treatments was used 1% cashew seed shell extract, 10% D. hispida tuber extract, and mixings of both extracts (0.5% + 5%; 0.5% + 10%; 1% + 5%; 1% + 10%), each replicated three times. Data were analyzed using ANOVA at a 5% significance level, followed by LSD when significant differences occurred. The results showed that the mixing of D. hispida tuber extract and cashew seed shell extract effectively suppressed the development of P. xylostella larvae across all observed parameters. The treatment mixings of 5% D. hispida tuber extract + 1% cashew seed shell extract; 10% D. hispida tuber extract + 0.5% cashew seed shell extract; and 1% cashew seed shell extract + 10% D. hispida tuber extract produced the best results for larval mortality, time to larvae becoming pupae, time to larvae becoming imago, percentage of larvae becoming pupae, percentage of larvae becoming imago and effectiveness plant based pesticides.
