Sungai Sangatta berperan sebagai sumber air bagi penduduk di daerah penelitian
serta menjadi penopang utama bagi ekosistem. Sungai Sangatta berada di dekat area
pertambangan yang dikelola oleh PT Kaltim Prima Coal sehingga kualitas airnya menjadi
perhatian utama bagi PT KPC agar air limbah pertambangan yang dihasilkan dilakukan
melalui pengelolaan terlebih dahulu sebelum di buang menuju badan air permukaan agar
tidak berpotensi merusak lingkungan. Tujuan penelitian ini antara lain untuk menganalisis
kualitas air limbah pertambangan PT KPC, menganalisis kualitas air Sungai, status mutu air
sungai dan konsentrasi pencampuran Sungai Sangatta, dan memberikan arahan pengolahan
terhadap air limbah pertambangan PT KPC untuk pengendalian pencemaran Sungai
Sangatta.
Penelitian ini dalam pengumpulan data geofisik kimia di daerah penelitian
menggunakan metode survey dan pemetaan. Metode yang digunakan dalam pengambilan
sampel air limbah pertambangan dan Sungai adalah metode Grab Sampling. Air sampel
limbah diambil pada inlet dan outlet limbah PSS Pond serta diambil 4 titik pada badan air
Sungai Sangatta. Metode laboratorium digunakan untuk mengetahui konsentrasi air limbah
terhadap parameter pH, TSS, Fe dan Mn, dan air Sungai terhadap parameter pH, TSS, Fe,
Mn dan TDS serta melakukan uji jar test. Metode analisis data menggunakan analisis
matematis untuk menganalisis indeks pencemaran sungai, konsentrasi pencampuran Sungai
Sangatta, dan effisiensi pengolahan jar test. Metode analisis deskriptif juga digunakan dalam
menganalisis, dan menampilkan data yang telah dikumpulkan secara terstruktur.
Hasil penelitian menunjukkan inlet PSS Pond parameter pH sebesar 6,15 (mendekati
asam), TSS 1510 mg/L melebihi baku mutu, dan parameter Fe, Mn yang masih cukup tinggi
jika di buang ke Sungai. Sedangkan outlet PSS Pond seluruh parameter sudah sesuai baku
mutu air limbah namun saat kondisi cuaca hujan, didapatkan pH dan TSS yang melebihi
baku mutu. Kualitas air Sungai sangatta dilakukan pengukuran didapatkan parameter TSS
(T1), Fe (T1), dan Mn (T2 & T3) telah melebihi baku mutu Sungai kelas I. Tingkat
pencemaran di Sungai sangatta termasuk kelas kondisi baik hingga tercemar ringan.
Konsentrasi pencampuran Sungai sangatta berdasarkan hasil perhitungan standart stream
didapatkan pada parameter Mn (T2), parameter TSS, Fe (T3) melebihi baku mutu. Dosis
optimal didapatkan 250 mg/L kapur dan 250 mg/L tawas, dengan waktu optimal 135-180
menit. Arahan pengolahan yang direkomendasikan didaerah penelitian adalah merancang
unit pengolahan berupa koagulasi-flokulasi-sedimentasi dalam meningkatkan efektifitas
pengolahan air limbah pertambangan.

IMPACT OF EFFORTS TO CONTROL POLLUTION FROM MINING
WASTEWATER (PSS POND) BY PT KPC ON THE WATER QUALITY OF THE
SANGATTA RIVER

ABSTRACT
The Sangatta River serves as a water source for the residents in the study area and
acts as a main support for the ecosystem. The Sangatta River is located near a mining area
managed by PT Kaltim Prima Coal (PT KPC), making the water quality a primary concern
for PT KPC to ensure that the wastewater generated by the mining activities undergoes
proper management before being discharged into surface water bodies to prevent potential
environmental damage. The objectives of this study include analyzing the quality of PT
KPC's mining wastewater, assessing the river water quality, evaluating the water quality
status of the Sangatta River, and determining the mixing concentration in the Sangatta River.
The study also aims to provide recommendations for wastewater treatment to control
pollution in the Sangatta River.
In collecting geophysical and chemical data from the study area, this research used
survey and mapping methods. The method applied for collecting wastewater and river water
samples was the Grab Sampling method. Wastewater samples were taken from the inlet and
outlet of the PSS Pond, and four sampling points were taken from the Sangatta River.
Laboratory methods were used to analyze the concentration of wastewater parameters, such
as pH, TSS, Fe, and Mn, and the river water parameters, including pH, TSS, Fe, Mn, and
TDS. A jar test was also conducted. Data analysis methods included mathematical analysis
to evaluate the river pollution index, the mixing concentration in the Sangatta River, and the
efficiency of the jar test treatment. Descriptive analysis was also employed to analyze and
present the data in a structured manner.
The results of the study showed that the pH parameter at the PSS Pond inlet was
6.15 (slightly acidic), with TSS at 1510 mg/L, exceeding the quality standard, and the Fe and
Mn parameters were still quite high when discharged into the river. Meanwhile, at the PSS
Pond outlet, all parameters met the wastewater quality standards; however, during rainy
conditions, the pH and TSS exceeded the standards. River water quality measurements in the
Sangatta River revealed that the TSS (T1), Fe (T1), and Mn (T2 & T3) parameters exceeded
Class I river quality standards. The pollution level in the Sangatta River was categorized as
good to slightly polluted. The mixing concentration in the Sangatta River, based on standard
stream calculations, showed that the Mn (T2) parameter and the TSS and Fe (T3)
parameters exceeded the standards. The optimal dosage was found to be 250 mg/L of lime
and 250 mg/L of alum, with an optimal reaction time of 135-180 minutes. The recommended
treatment for the study area is to design a treatment unit involving coagulation, flocculation,
and sedimentation to improve the efficiency of mining wastewater treatment.
