Pulau Obi merupakan bagian dari kepulauan Halmahera Selatan yang memiliki
potensi akan nikel. Nikel laterit merupakan hasil dari pelapukan pada batuan ultramafik.
Endapan nikel laterit banyak terbentuk pada daerah beriklim tropis seperti Pulau Obi.
Endapan nikel laterit yang terbentuk pada Pulau Obi, khususnya daerah Hill X memiliki
ciri yang menjadi karakteristik endapan nikel laterit pada daerah penelitian.
Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini merupakan metode kuantitatif dengan
pendekatan pemetaan permukaan (surface mapping method) yang didukung oleh data
sekunder (data sumur bor dan data assay) serta analisis sampel.
Berdasarkan pengamatan di lapangan dan analisis data geokimia, diketahui
karakteristik endapan nikel laterit pada daerah penelitian yaitu: karakteristik batuan dasar
yang menghasilkan endapan nikel laterit di daerah penelitian berupa batuan harzburgit dan
batuan serpentinit. Endapan nikel laterit yang terbentuk di daerah penelitian merupakan
jenis endapan oksida dan endapan hidrous Mg silikat berdasarkan mineral penyusunnya.
Penentuan zona dalam profil laterit dapat dilakukan berdasarkan perubahan nilai
Fe, MgO, dan SiO2. Dalam profil laterit, zona limonit merupakan zona yang kaya akan
Fe, sedangkan zona saprolit merupakan zona pengayaan Ni, dan zona batuan dasar rendah
akan Fe dan Ni, namun tinggi akan MgO dan SiO2. Nikel tertinggi terdapat pada DH10,
yaitu 1,9 % dengan batuan dasar berupa batuan harzburgit.Karakteristik endapan nikel
laterit berdasarkan topografi, yaitu endapan akan sangat tebal (17,2 m) pada lereng landai
(2-8%), tebal (15,5m) pada lereng agak curam (8-15%), sedang (11 m) pada lereng curam
(15-25%), dan pada lereng sangat curam hingga curam (>25%)endapan yang terbentuk
sangat tipis (<4,8 m).

Obi Island is part of the South Halmahera islands which has potential for nickel.
Nickel laterite is the result of weathering of ultramafic rocks. Lateritic nickel deposits are
often formed in tropical climates such as Obi Island. Lateritic nickel deposits formed on
Obi Island, especially the Hill X area, have characteristics that characterize lateritic
nickel deposits in the study area.
The method used in this research is a quantitative method with a surface mapping
method approach supported by secondary data (borehole data and assay data) and
sample analysis.
Based on field observations and geochemical data analysis, it is known that the
characteristics of nickel laterite deposits in the research area are: the characteristics of
the bedrock that produces nickel laterite deposits in the research area are harzburgite
and serpentinite rocks. The laterite nickel deposits formed in the study area are oxide
deposits and hydrous Mg silicate deposits based on their constituent minerals.
Zone determination in the laterite profile can be done based on changes in Fe,
MgO and SiO2 values. In the laterite profile, the limonite zone is a Fe-rich zone, while
the saprolite zone is a Ni-enriching zone, and the bedrock zone is low in Fe and Ni, but
high in MgO and SiO2. The highest nickel is found in DH10, which is 1.9% with bedrock
in the form of harzburgite rocks.Characteristics of laterite nickel deposits based on
topography, namely deposits will be very thick (17.2m) on gentle slopes (2-8%), thick
(15.5m) on moderately steep slopes (8-15%), medium (11m) on steep slopes (15-25%),
and on very steep to steep slopes (>25%) the deposits formed are very thin (<4.8042m).
