TANAMAN Typha latifolia DAN PENAMBAHAN BAHAN ORGANIK PADA
AZALEA POND PT KALTIM PRIMA COAL (KPC)

INTISARI
Kegiatan penambangan batubara menghasilkan limbah cair berupa air asam
tambang dengan kandungan logam terlarut berupa besi (Fe) dan mangan (Mn).
Pengelolaan air asam tambang dengan sistem lahan basah buatan (constructed
wetland) menggunakan tanaman Typha latifolia dan penambahan bahan organik
berupa kompos dan tankos sawit dapat menjadi alternatif pengolahan karena tidak
memerlukan biaya yang terlalu tinggi. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah mengetahui
sumber dan karakteristik air asam tambang yang menuju Azalea Pond, mengetahui
pengaruh sistem lahan basah buatan dengan penambahan bahan organik terhadap pH
dan konsentrasi logam Fe dan Mn, dan memberikan arahan pengelolaan.
Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode kuantitatif dengan
pendekatan eksperimen. Metode pengumpulan data menggunakan metode survei dan
pemetaan serta metode uji laboratorium. Metode sampling terbagi atas grab
sampling, purposive sampling, dan random sampling. Metode analisis terbagi atas
analisis deskriptif, statistik, dan matematis. Metode statistik menggunakan uji two
way anova dengan jumlah data 48 dan taraf kepercayaan 95%. Percobaan lahan
basah buatan dilakukan dalam skala laboratorium menggunakan 12 reaktor selama
15 hari. Setiap reaktor berisikan tanah, bahan organik, air asam tambang, dan
tanaman Typha latifolia. Percobaan terbagi atas 4 perlakuan yakni, tanpa
penambahan bahan organik, penambahan tankos sawit, penambahan kompos, dan
penambahan 50% tankos sawit 50% kompos.
Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa air asam tambang Azalea Pond memiliki
nilai pH yang sangat rendah yakni sebesar 3,8 dan konsentrasi mangan yang tinggi
mencapai 6,5 mg/l. Sistem lahan basah buatan dengan penambahan bahan organik
mampu meningkatkan pH dari 3,8 menjadi 7,39. Kemudian mampu menurunkan
konsentrasi Fe dari 3,2 mg/l menjadi 0,11 mg/l dengan efisiensi 96,46% dan Mn dari
6,5 mg/l menjadi 0,03 mg/l dengan efisiensi 99,49%. Rekomendasi arahan
pengelolaan yang dapat dilakukan adalah dengan membuat lahan basah buatan
menggunakan tanaman Typha latifolia (hiperakumulator) dan penambahan bahan
organik berupa kompos. Komposisi lahan basah buatan adalah 30% tanah, 30%
bahan organik (kompos), dan 40% air asam tambang. Pengolahan dilakukan dengan
waktu tinggal selama 5 hari.

EFFORTS TO HANDLE ACID MINE DRAINAGE USING CONSTRUCTED
WETLAND SYSTEM WITH Typha latifolia PLANTS AND ORGANIC MATTER
ADDITION AT AZALEA POND PT KALTIM PRIMA COAL (KPC)

ABSTRACT
Coal mining activities generate liquid waste in the form of acid mine drainage
containing dissolved metals such as iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn). Managing acid
mine drainage through a constructed wetland system using Typha latifolia plants and
the addition of organic materials like compost and empty palm oil fruit bunches can
be an alternative treatment method due to its cost-effectiveness. The objectives of this
research are to identify the sources and characteristics of acid mine drainage
flowing into Azalea Pond, assess the impact of the constructed wetland system with
the addition of organic matter on pH and the concentrations of Fe and Mn, and
provide appropriate management guidelines.
The method employed in this research is quantitative with an experimental
approach. Data collection methods include surveys, mapping, and laboratory testing.
Sampling methods consist of grab sampling, purposive sampling, and random
sampling. Analytical methods include descriptive, statistical, and mathematical
analyses. Statistical analysis employs a two-way ANOVA test with 48 data points and
a 95% confidence level. The constructed wetland experiment is conducted on a
laboratory scale using 12 reactors for 15 days. Each reactor contains soil, organic
material, acid mine drainage, and Typha latifolia plants. The experiment consists of
four treatments: without organic material addition, with empty palm oil fruit bunch
addition, with compost addition, and with a 50% empty palm oil fruit bunch and 50%
compost addition.
The research results show that the acid mine drainage in Azalea Pond has a
very low pH value of 3.8 and a high manganese concentration of 6.5 mg/l. The
constructed wetland system with organic material addition is capable of increasing
the pH from 3.8 to 7.39. It can also reduce the Fe concentration from 3.2 mg/l to
0.11 mg/l with an efficiency of 96.46% and the Mn concentration from 6.5 mg/l to
0.03 mg/l with an efficiency of 99.49%. Recommended management guidance
includes creating a constructed wetland using Typha latifolia plants
(hyperaccumulator) and adding organic materials like compost. The composition of
the constructed wetland consists of 30% soil, 30% organic material (compost), and
40% acid mine drainage. Treatment should be conducted with a retention time of 5
days.
