Environmental pollution that may result from gas station activities is a leak in
the storage tank for storing fuel oil in the ground. Tank leaks cause the contained
hydrocarbon compounds to enter the soil which will then flow with the flow of
groundwater so that the groundwater becomes polluted. The purpose of this study was
conducted to analyze the physical environmental factors that most influence the
potential for benzene contamination in groundwater; knowing the spatial distribution
of benzene pollution to groundwater around the Candimas Cilacap gas stations
potentially; provide appropriate control guidelines for benzene contamination of
groundwater.
The research method used is both quantitative and qualitative. Pollution
potential classes were determined using the LeGrand method with scoring,
assessment, and mapping carried out on 5 physical environmental factors, namely
groundwater depth, absorption capacity above the groundwater table, aquifer
permeability, groundwater slope, and horizontal distance. The potential spatial
distribution of groundwater contamination is determined based on the total score of
the physical environment parameters and the direction of groundwater flow. Benzene
levels were obtained through the results of laboratory analysis of 4 samples of well
water. Statistical test to determine the value of regression - correlation which shows
the level of influence of each factor on the potential for benzene contamination in
groundwater. The highest correlation coefficient indicates the most influential
environmental factor.
Based on the potential pollution map, the direction of groundwater flow is to
the south of the gas station, so that section has the potential to experience benzene
contamination if a storage tank leak occurs. Benzene levels at the study site were below
safe limits. The environmental factor that most determines the potential for benzene
contamination of groundwater is the depth of the groundwater table. The appropriate
management direction for this research is pollution control through the stages of
process mitigation, stockpiling and distribution of fuel.
