Daerah penelitian sebagian besar termasuk dalam IUP OP PT. Bukit
Makmur Istindo Nikeltama yang terletak di daerah Towara dan sekitarnya,
Kecamatan Petasia Timur, Kabupaten Morowali Utara, Sulawesi Tengah. Secara
geologi, Daerah Towara dan sekitarnya termasuk ke dalam lengan timur sulawesi
yang tersusun atas batuan ultramafik sebagai penghasil endapan nikel laterit.
Penelitian dilakukan dengan metode pemetaan permukaan dan didukung dengan
data analisa geokimia dari lubang bor terdahulu.
Daerah Towara dan sekitarnya tersusun atas 3 satuan bentukasal yaitu
bentuk asal denudasional, bentuk asal fluvial, dan bentuk asal antropogenik. Secara
stratigrafi, daerah ini terusun atas satuan peridotit, satuan serpentinit dan endapan
rawa dimana batuan yang hadir di daerah penelitian ialah serpentinit, dunit,
peridotit yang tidak terserpentinisasi, terserpentinisasi rendah-tinggi. Berdasarkan
hasil penelitian, peridotit yang tidak terserpentinisasi memiliki pengkayaan Ni pada
zona saprolit yang lebih tinggi daripada peridotit terserpentinisasi.
Daerah penelitian terbagi menjadi 2 punggungan yang dikontrol dengan
kehadirannya struktur berupa right slip fault sehingga menunjukkan karakteristik
endapan nikel laterit yang berbeda dimana punggungan selatan menunjukkan kadar
Ni yang cukup bagus sedangkan punggungan utara menunjukkan kadar Ni yang
rendah. Berdasarkan faktor pengontrol lateritisasi, daerah yang dapat dikatakan
prospek di daerah penelitian yaitu berada di bagian punggungan selatan daerah
Towara dengan topografi lereng yang tidak terlalu curam, berbatuan dasar peridotit
tidak terserpentinisasi.

CHARACTERISTIC NICKEL LATERITE BASED ON MINERALOGY AN
GEOCHEMICAL ELEMENT IN TOWARA, EAST PETASIA DISTRICT,
NORTH MOROWALI REGENCY, CENTRAL SULAWESI

Most of the research areas are included in the IUP OP PT. Bukit Makmur
Istindo Nikeltama which is located in Towara and its surroundings, East Petasia
District, North Morowali Regency, Central Sulawesi. Geologically, the Towara
area and its surroundings are included in the eastern arm of Sulawesi, which is
composed of ultramafic rocks that produce nickel laterite deposits. The research
was carried out using the surface mapping method and supported by geochemical
analysis data from previous drill holes.
Towara area and its surroundings are composed of 3 units of landform,
namely denudational landform, fluvial landform, and anthropogenic landform.
Stratigraphically, this area is composed of peridotite litodem, serpentinite litodem
and swamp deposits where the rocks present in the study area are serpentinite,
dunite, non-serpentinized, low-high serpentinized peridotite. Based on the research
results, non-serpentinized peridotite has higher Ni enrichment in the saprolite zone
than serpentinized peridotite.
The study area is divided into 2 ridges which are controlled by the presence
of a geological structure in the form of a right slip fault so that it shows different
characteristics of nickel laterite deposits where the southern ridge shows quite good
Ni content while the northern ridge shows low Ni content. Based on the controlling
factor of lateritization, the area that can be considered as prospect in the study area
is located on the southern ridge of the Towara area with a not too steep slope
topography, non-serpentinized peridotite bedrock.
