Abstract

Abstract
The objective of the article is to explore wether the ASEAN’s amity regime could strengthen the
“we feeling” of ASEAN member states and how it works. To do so the author analyzes territorial disputes
of ASEAN original members.
In the years of it founding many analysts were not sure with the longivity of ASEAN. It is because
ASEAN original member states were in conflictual situation with each other, especially in relation with
territorial claim. They are also diverse in territorial seize, etnic and religion, political orientation, and the
type of administration. Therefore many analysts were also not sure with the future of ASEAN.
It is surprising that ASEAN remains exist today and grows as an important actor in international
fora. ASEAN has succesfully initiated ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF). The forum is the one and the only
security forum outside the United Nations that involved all major powers in the world. ASEAN also plays
significant role in Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) since its inception. ASEAN has also
succesfully initiated and organized a forum consist of three east Asian countries namely China, Japan, and
Sotuh Korea, called ASEAN Plus Three.
The fact of todays ASEAN development that contrary to analysts’ sceptical view in its formation
years rises question on how could it be. This article tries to inquire the puzzle
