Abstract

Indigofera is a plant whose leaves can be used as natural dyes for dyeing batik cloth that has a prospective future. In Yogyakarta, as the center of batik industries, most of the batik industries make use of chemical dyes. Similarly, most of the batik industries in the village Wukirsari, Imogiri, Bantul also use chemical dyes. The advantages of chemical dyes are inexpensive and more stable in comparison
with natural dyes. Furthermore, chemical dyes are more varied in colors and continuous in their availability that consumers feel more satisfied. Nonetheless, since there has
been a ban on using chemical dye, especially of the type of azo in Netherlands, Japan, and Germany, the make use of natural dyes becomes more prospective. Dye-producing plants grow widespreadly in Indonesia. More than 150 species of
plants produce a dye that can be extracted from the roots, stems, leaves, flowers, bark, and others. One of those dye-producing plants is Indigofera. It leaves can be extracted to produce a blue natural color. The analysis of the situation shows a conclusion that most people in the village of Wukirsari, Imogiri, Bantul rely their lives on the income from the craft of batik, meanwhile the main consumers of their products are foreign tourists who like batik with
natural dyes because it is more environmentally friendly and the colors are more natural, despite the high prices. Thus, there is a necessity to introduce plant cultivations that can produce natural dyes as the raw materials of natural dyes for batik craft, one of which is Indigofera.
