Abstract
The goal of this research is to implement the on-off method for tuning of composition controller
parameters in a mixing tank with salt solution flowrate as a manipulated variable
experimentally in laboratory. A 10 L tank was designed for mixing of salt solution (as a stream�1) and water (as a stream-2). An electric stirrer was employed to achieve uniform characteristic
in tank. The tank system was designed overflow to ensure its volume constant. In this work, the
salt solution flowrate was chosen as a manipulated variable to maintain the salt composition in
tank constant at its desired value. In the on-off experiment, the valve of stream-1 was suddenly
fully open (on position) for several seconds and fully closed (off position) for several seconds.
As a result, the salt composition in tank will increase and decrease, respectively. The on-off
curve of composition in tank was then used to tune Proportional Integral Derivative (PID)
control parameters. The on-off experiment gave PID control parameters as follows: controller
gain of Kc=68790, integral time constant of I=80s, and derivative time constant of D=19s.
The tuning PID results would be evaluated through rigorous closed loop dynamic simulation in
the future work.
