Abstract
This research was aimed to study the process dynamic and to implement the on-off method for
tuning of composition controller parameters in a mixing tank with water flowrate as a
manipulated variable experimentally in laboratory. A 10 L tank was designed for mixing of salt
solution (as a stream-1) and water (as a stream-2). An electric stirrer was used to obtained
uniform characteristic in tank. In order to ensure liquid volume in tank constant, the tank
system was designed overflow. The water flowrate was chosen as a manipulated variable to
keep the salt composition in tank constant at its set point. In the on-off experiment, the valve of
stream-2 was suddenly fully open (on position) for several seconds and fully closed (off
position) for several seconds. As a result, the salt composition in tank will decrease and
increase, respectively. The composition on-off curve was then utilized to tune Proportional
Integral Derivative (PID) control parameters. The on-off experiment gave PID control
parameters as follows: controller gain of Kc=61146, integral time constant of I=80s, and
derivative time constant of D=19s. In order to evaluate the tuning PID results, the rigorous
closed loop dynamic simulation need to be done in the future work.
