Abstract

Jambakan Village in Bayat District, Klaten has great groundwater potential but has
a brackish taste. The brackish taste in ground water in Jambakan Village is
strengthened by the results of the DHL and TDS tests using EC meters directly in the
field which shows a value of DHL 1500-3000 µs / cm or TDS> 1000 mg / L which falls
into the brackish water category. Under these conditions the community cannot
obtain clean water. The purpose of this study is to treat brackish ground water so
as to reduce the TDS value and groundwater conductivity. The method used is
adsorption by utilizing the ion exchange process using activated zeolites. Zeolites
used are natural zeolites from the District of Hargomulyo, Gunung Kidul Regency.
Activation using NH4NO3 and HCl solution, then added with biosurfactant of
Isopropyl Stearyl Alginate with variations in concentration 0 ; 0,5 % ; 1 % ; 1,5 % ;
and 2 %.The most effective activated zeolite in processing brackish water is
activated zeolite with the addition of surfactant 1,5 %, which is able to reduce TDS
from 3933 mg/L to 2471mg/L, and conductivity of 7946 µs / cm to 5072 µs / cm
