Abstract

Coal tailing as coal industry waste has low calorific value with high concentration of
sulfur and ash. One of the methods to reduce sulfur content and to increase its
caloric value is flotation. Flotation is process of separating component in the solid
phase using bubble in the liquid phase by altering surface properties of the
component. Surfactant utilized in flotation process can provide hydrophobic and
hydrophilic tails so it can lower the surface tension in liquid phase, hence it will ease
the removal of sulfur and ash from coal tailing.
In this study, flotation experiments using biosurfactant from Lerak (Sapindusrarak
De Candole)were conducted. Biosurfactant were used to minimize pollution.
Optimum condition were obtain at flotation time 60 minutes, air flowrate 0.7640
L/min, and volume ratio of coal tailing and Lerak 4:1. The total sulfur were removed
up to 56.78% and its calorific value were increased from 4748.38 to 5379.41
calories/gram. The result obtained indicate that Lerak can be used as a potential
surfactant to enhance coal tailing quality via flotation.
