DISKRIMINASI RASIAL DI AMERIKA SERIKAT
TAHUN 2020
ABSTRAK
Perkembangan teknologi telah melahirkan kemudahan terhadap akses penyaluran
maupun penerimaan sebuah informasi. Media sosial merupakan salah satu wujud
nyata dari pesatnya perkembangan teknologi yang dapat mempermudah masyarakat
global untuk mendapatkan dan menyebarkan informasi, berinteraksi, serta saling
terhubung satu sama lain tanpa adanya batasan. Twitter merupakan salah satu media
sosial yang sering digunakan oleh masyarakat untuk berinteraksi maupun
menyebarkan dan menerima sebuah informasi. Media sosial tersebut juga menjadi
salah satu alat bagi penggemar K-Pop dalam melakukan aksi untuk menyebarkan
informasi terkait budaya populer dalam mendukung idola favorit mereka. Aksi
tersebut kemudian meluas terhadap aksi-aksi yang dilakukan dalam mengangkat
isu-isu global kontemporer. Media sosial Twitter tidak jarang digunakan untuk
melakukan partisipasi politik melalui kegiatan aktivisme secara daring. Black Lives
Matter merupakan salah satu bentuk gerakan sosial baru (new social movement)
yang tumbuh dari penggunaan media sosial Twitter. Berawal dari kasus kematian
Trayvon Martin pada tahun 2012 dengan penggunaan tagar #BlackLivesMatter di
Twitter. Gerakan ini kemudian berkembang dan salah satunya terjadi pada saat
kematian George Floyd di tahun 2020 yang menyebabkan terjadi protes secara
global baik melalui tindakan demonstrasi di jalan hingga protes secara daring.
Penggemar K-Pop telah berpartisipasi dalam kegiatan aktivisme untuk mendukung
berbagai isu-isu global kontemporer saat ini mulai dari lingkungan, kesehatan, hak
asasi manusia hingga isu sosial politik lainnya. Dalam penelitian ini, penggemar K�Pop berpartisipasi dalam mendukung gerakan anti-rasisme Black Lives Matter
khususnya pasca kematian George Floyd dengan menggunakan media sosial
Twitter dalam menjalankan aksi-aksinya. Dengan menggunkan konsep fan activism
serta metode kualitatif melalui pengumpulkan dokumen terkait dan informasi
melalui Twitter, ditemukan bahwa bentuk dari fan activism penggemar K-Pop
dalam isu diskriminasi rasial di Amerika Serikat yaitu dengan melakukan
peningkatan kesadaran (raising awareness) terhadap isu yang terjadi, melakukan
penggalangan dana atau donasi, serta menyebarkan dan menandatangani petisi
secara daring untuk menegakan keadilan terhadap kasus George Floyd.

FAN ACTIVISM OF K-POP FANS ON RACIAL
DISCRIMINATION ISSUE IN THE UNITED STATES OF
AMERICA
YEAR 2020
ABSTRACT
Technological development has brought ease of the access to distribution and
receipt of information. Social media is one of tangible manifestation of the rapid
development of technology that brought an easy way for global community to obtain
and disseminate information, interact, and interconnect with one another without
any limitations. Twitter is one of the social media that is often used by the public to
interact, disseminate and obtain information. The use of social media is also
became a tool for K-Pop fans run their action to spread information for supporting
their favorite idols through popular culture. The activities has expanded to form of
actions that has been taken to raise a contemporary global issues. Twitter is also
used often to carry out political participation through online activism activities.
Black Lives Matter is a form of new social movement that grew out of the use of
social media Twitter. Starting from the case of the death of Trayvon Martin in 2012
with the use of the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter on Twitter. This movement then
developed and one of them occurred during the death of George Floyd in 2020
which caused global protests, both through street demonstrations and online
protests. K-Pop fans nowdays have participated in activism activities to support
various contemporary global issues ranging from environment, health, human
rights to other socio-political issues. In this research, K-Pop fans participated in
supporting the Black Lives Matter anti-racism movement, especially after the death
of George Floyd by using social media Twitter in carrying out their actions.
Through this research, the form of fan activism of K-Pop fans in the issue of racial
discrimination in the United States is carried out through several actions. By using
the concept of fan activism, and qualitative method which gathered information
through documents and Twitter itself, found that actions carried out by the fandom
is raising awareness of the issues that occur, raising funds or donations, and
distributing and signing online petitions to uphold justice for the George Floyd
case.
