Abstract
This paper devotes interpretation result on relationship 0/tectonic earthquake with occurred
geological phenomena. The study is based on field observations and measurements, and is
supported by secondary collected data from BMG, USGS. PPAlJ, UNOSAT. and Geological
Map of Yogyakarta sheet. .
Geological interpretation concludes thatthe May 21" 2006 tectonic earthquake was shallow
quake on 5.9 Richter Scale, its focus was far above the Benioff's. Zone. The quake was·
caused by energy force releases as compression force accumulation of the two plateconvergences, passed over its continue shearing strain between fault blocks. The realized energy
had reactivated old fault system of Tertiaryrocks, either the Quaternary sediment cover underneath old faults or exposed old faults. The condition had been responsible for the devas-.
tated situation and been available following geological phenomena.
The occurred geological phenomena during earthquake were: new joint formations, liquefaction. mass movements cut young fluviovolcanic sediment, underground roar. New joint
formation had cut young sediments with Northeast-Southwest, North-South, East-West and
Northwest-Southeast trending. Liquefaction during earthquake occurred along fractures. In
some localities ita fountain reached 4 meter high and be accompanied by mud, sand and
sometimes sulfor smell. Mass movement quit frequent had been occurred in mountain slopes .
or in hills cui by faults. Mass movement consists of rock falls. subsidence. landslides and
creeps. Devastative buildings followed the earthquake trend Ruin of housing, infrastructures seems to be related 10fracture trends during the earthquake. Geological structure dis- .
tribution of the May 21" 2006 earthquake has been devoted after the observation and measurements during andpost-quake. .
