Abstract

ogyakarta Special Region Province known as a province of culture. The characteristic of this brand is increasingly emphasized by the provincial government through local identity "Yogyakarta Never Ending Asia" in 2001. That brand was created with the hope of encouraging the promotion of Yogyakarta. The fact shows the identity that made as a lure for foreign tourists doesn't work enough. Image built by the government to positioning itself as a cultural province is facing a failure. In this case, the local government did not synergize labels of Yogyakarta as a province of culture by developing cultural policies but rather more emphasis on industrialization and modernization. As a result, the implementation of branding was more focus on the construction of malls, hotels and apartments compared to develop cultural sites. The tourism village is one of the peculiarities culture that can be developed to strengthen the branding of Yogyakarta. It offers a unique form of local community traditions, landscapes and rural atmosphere that can be enjoyed by tourists. The existence of tourism village grows naturally from the active participation of local community. This tourism village is important to support the government's policy to popularize brand of Yogyakarta Special Region as a cultural province.
