Abstract The aims of the research were to examine the interation between harvesting time and hot water dipping temperature on palm oil seed quality and to obtain the best time harvesting and the optimum temperature for hot water dipping. The experiment was conducted in PT. Tirta Madu Kijang Riau from Mei to July 2005. The experimental design was completely Randomized Design 3 X 3 factorial. The first factor was harvesting time at: 5,5 months (U1), 6 months (U2), 6,5 months (U3). The second factor was dipping temperature at 40oC (P1), 60oC (P2), 80oC (P3). The quality parameters observed consist of seed potency (%), seed viability (%), index vigor, coefficient germination,seedling height (cm) and leaf area (cm). The result of the research showed that was no interaction between harvesting time and hot water dipping temperature. Temperature 60oC was the best dipping for breaking dormancy showed by seed potency,viability index vigor, seeding height and leaf area. Mean while six months was the best harvesting time for all parameters. Keyword: harvesting time, dipping temperature, seed quality Abstrak Penelitian bertujuan untuk mengetahui interaksi antara umur petik dan perlakuan suhu perendaman air panas terhadap mutu benih kelapa sawit dan untuk mendapatkan umur petik dan perlakuan suhu perendaman yang paling tepat. Penelitian dilaksanakan bulan Mei sampai dengan bulan Juli 2005 di PT. Tirtamadu Kijang Kepulauan Riau. Percobaan dilakukan dengan menggunakan Rancangan Acak Lengkap (RAL) faktorial, Faktor pertama umur petik terdiri atas 3 aras yaitu U1: umur 5,5 bulan; U2: umur 6 bulan; U3: umur 6,5 bulan. Faktor kedua perendaaman suhu air panas terdiri atas 3 aras yaitu P1: 40oc; P2: 60oC; P3: 80oC. Parameter yang diamati meliputi: potensi benih (%), keserempakan tumbuh (%), daya kecambah benih (%), indeksvigor, koefisien perkecambahan, tinggi bibit (cm) dan luas daun (cm). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan tidak ada interaksi antara umur petik dan perlakuan suhu air panas perendam. Suhu air panas perendam 60oC dapat mematahkan dormansi terbaik, ditunjukkan oleh parameter potensi benih, daya kecaambah, indeks vigor, tinggi bibit dan luas daun. Sedangkan umur petik 6 bulan memberikan pengaruh terbaik pada semua parameter. Kata kunci: umur petik, suhu perendaman, mutu benih
