Abstract

Africa is a region that has still problems of poverty, famine and drought that trigger to conflict. Darfur is a part of Sudan, Africa that has one of the worst conflicts in the last decade. There are two parties, which are Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM/A) that join another armed political group Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) and the armed nomadic group or Sudanese Government Army (Arab Militia) called ‘Janjaweed’. The SLA and JEM has similar demands which are to end the political and economic marginalization and to protect their community against Janjaweed’s attack (ethnic cleansing). The warfare between two parties happened in Darfur in early 2003. There are so many victims caused by violation of Janjaweed such as killing, looting and rape. It could be said as a complicated issue which needs special attention from the international community. This paper will analyze details about how conflict that occurred in Darfur by using the concept of “Paul Wehr”. There are three components that could be identified how the Darfur conflict occurs includes Context, Parties and Causes and Consequences. The international community also effort and involved in the process of peace in Darfur. In conclusion, let me reiterate that the main point to end this conflict is based on the willingnes of the conflicting parties, especially the Government of Sudan and its military. Although, the peace building efforts have not succeeded, at least the conflict could be managed. As a result, an open warfare in Darfur can be prevented.
