Abstract

In line with the increasing complexity of life problems in society, social and psychological crisis happening to many people spread over societies everywhere. As the consequence, there occurs what is then called psychosomatic disease recognized as cancer, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, etc among people. Psychosomatic disease is in fact an obviously visual physical disease triggered by psychological factors such as anxiety, high tension, too much thought, and uncontrolled emotion. A group of people claiming themselves as Pengajian Tawakal (Devout Qur’an Assembly) attempt to provide an alternative healing for this psychosomatic disease. This research is conducted to understand and describe in details about three things: first, their concept about sick and disease, especially their effort in healing psychosomatic disease through a dzikir (litany) method; second, conditions driving them to conduct various treatments in healing this disease; third, the social relationship among the members of Pengajian Tawakal (Devout Qur’an Assembly). The theoretical framework of the study covers up the theory of social conduct, process of conduct, and sociology communication. Qualitative method using descriptive analytic and case study is applied for this research. Data have been gathered by applying in-depth interview toward key persons, participant observation, documentation, and library study. This research successfully revealed the fact that the assembly members believed that the litany they are doing, besides as a medium for self-giving to God, could be a problem solver for any life problems including for healing a psychosomatic disease. Their concept says that the cause of a psychosomatic disease is from the inner part of the patient. If one wrongly conducts the religion teaching, there will be imbalance between his spiritual condition and physical condition. This will bring a psychosomatic disease. Somehow, concerning the method applied, there are variations in treating the disease. This happens because of there being differences of social realities covering up the experiences and responses toward medical treatment, the intensity of non-medical treatment, and the social relationship among the assembly members
