Abstract
Japan was one of the countries devastatingly affected by the World War II. Being one of the aggressors, Japan is held accused by many of its former occupations for war violations, including Philippine, Indonesia, Korea, and China. This issue, however, have never been touched down upon the people of Japan, except maybe for few people whose family members were military and dispatched for Asia Pacific war. Politically, stories about Japan's war violations have been kept secret by the convolution of SCAP (Supreme Command of the Allied Powers) concerning the dethronement of the emperor and the absolution of Japan's wartime criminal on the one hand and the enthrallment of Japan in the cold war on the other hand. Culturally, work of popular arts has helped pass on war memories to the younger generation. Political censorship that once helped the post-war government to impose historical silencing has no longer relevant with the current state of openness. Taking popular arts, especially manga, the paper attempts to examine the potentialities of pop culture artifact in facilitating the objective of peace education in Japan.
