Abstract
The leader plays an important role in managing an organization. Some responsibilities of leaders cover defining and focusing attention on the goals, allocating scarce resources, building relationships with subordinates, and determining the correct direction for the achievement of organizational goals. This can be achieved if there is willingness and ability of subordinates who knowingly perform tasks or work in the absence of coercion from the leadership. This kind of leadership style is called transformational leadership that is expected to be able to grow the performance of subordinates or employees in an organization, with a high spirit of dedication to the organization (organizational commitment). This study aims to examine the effect of transformational leadership styles on employee performance where is organizational commitment as an intervening variable. Transformational leadership style is characterized into four types, namely : charisma, inspiration, intellectual stimulation, and individualized consideration. Organizational commitment consist of personal characteristics, job characteristics, structural characteristics, and work experience. The employee’s performances are characterized into quality of work, quantity of work, cooperation with other’s work, and time of work. Data collection was conducted by distributing questionnaires to all employees at STIM AMP YKPN Yogyakarta, which consists of groups of lecturer, administrative staff, and pramubhakti. There were 54 valid out of total 59 questionares distributed. The overall hypothesis testing is done by t-test, reliability test, and regression analysis. Finding in this analysis proves that transformational leadership style did not significantly influence employee performance directly, but gives effect on employee performance through organizational commitment as an intervening variable. In terms of employee performance itself, there was no difference in performance between groups of lecturer, administrative staff and pramubhakti.
